About the resources
The “Small Worlds, Big Futures - Reporting from a Pollinator Powered 2030” materials are a set of practical resources developed specifically for the 2026–2027 YRE International Competition theme. Designed for both young reporters and educators, the resources help explore pollinators and the often-overlooked “small worlds” around us, investigate their connections to wider environmental issues, and turn these discoveries into YRE reporting. Educators can choose from different activity options depending on the time and depth available.

A practical guide for young reporters with activities, questions, investigation ideas, and prompts to help them look closely at pollinators and small nature, explore local stories, and develop their own YRE reporting.

Small Worlds, Big Futures: Exploring Pollinators through YRE. A Guide for Educators

A practical guide introducing educators to the competition theme, key concepts, investigation opportunities, and ways to support young people in exploring pollinators through the YRE methodology.

Launch Activity
A ready-to-use introductory activity to spark curiosity about pollinators and small nature and help young people identify possible issues and stories to investigate.

4-Lesson Sequence
A structured four-lesson option that takes young people from exploring the theme to investigating an issue and developing their own YRE story.

Extended Project: 2–6 Weeks
A longer project option for educators who want to explore the theme in greater depth, giving young reporters more time to investigate locally, engage with different perspectives, explore solutions, and develop their final YRE work.

YRE Journey Materials for Young Reporters

The YRE Journey Materials are a set of practical, ready-to-use resources created directly for young reporters to support them through each step of the YRE journey. The pack includes one guide for each of the four YRE steps, together with a YRE Journey Planner to help young people organise the whole process. All materials are ready to print, black and white, and printer-friendly, with plenty of space to write, scribble, brainstorm, take notes, and develop ideas as their reporting journey progresses.

YOUNG REPORTERS IN EVENTS

Turn events into opportunities to investigate, connect, and report. Combining practical guidance with a ready-to-print workbook, the pack helps young people prepare, participate confidently, gather information and perspectives, and turn their experience into meaningful environmental reporting.

The YRE Event Guide
A practical guide to help young reporters make the most of events and conferences. From preparing questions and identifying who to speak to, to gathering information, exploring different perspectives, and thinking about how to communicate what they discover.

Ready-to-Print Event Workbook
A workbook young reporters can take with them to an event and complete before, during, and after their participation. It provides space to prepare, take notes, capture key ideas and perspectives, and reflect on what they learned and what they might do next.
