Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) is a global youth-led programme by FEE that empowers young people to research, report, and take action on local environmental issues. But YRE is not just for students. Educators, schools, youth groups, scout organisations, and community partners all play a vital role in inspiring and supporting the next generation of environmental storytellers.

By joining YRE, you become part of an international community working together to give the environment a voice. Whether you’re a young reporter ready to investigate, an educator guiding a class, or an organisation looking to collaborate, your journey starts here.

1. Check for an existing National Operator

First, check whether Young Reporters for the Environment is already run by a National Operator in your country.

If one exists, connect with them to explore opportunities for collaboration and strengthen YRE's national network.

2. No National Operator in your country?

YRE is one of the international education programmes operated by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and delivered through its global network of member organisations.

If your organisation is interested in bringing YRE to your country, you can explore becoming a FEE Member Organisation.

FEE Membership provides access to the YRE programme framework, international network, resources and opportunities to participate fully in YRE projects and activities.

Please note that FEE Membership involves a membership fee.

3. Not ready for membership yet?

If you are a newly established organisation or membership is not yet feasible, you can start by:

  • Exploring the YRE Four Steps Methodology

  • Learning more about YRE through the FEE Academy e-learning platform

  • Following YRE's international activities, resources and opportunities

When your organisation is ready, you can explore FEE Membership to formally join the international network and deliver Young Reporters for the Environment in your country.

A) I am a young person, educator or school staff member

1. Check if YRE operates in your country

First, check whether YRE is run by a National Operator in your country using the map or button below.

National Offices

If your country has a National Operator, connect with them directly. National Operators coordinate YRE activities at the national level and can help you:

  • Join the YRE programme

  • Access educational resources

  • Participate in national and international projects

  • Take part in the annual YRE International Competition

  • Connect with the national YRE community

2. No National Operator in your country?

There may still be ways for your school to participate.

Is your school part of the UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet)?

If yes, contact your National Coordinator to find out about opportunities to participate in YRE activities through the network.

Not part of UNESCO ASPnet?

Schools can also join YRE through the FEE International Schools programme.

If you are a young person or educator, speak to your school about applying directly through the FEE Head Office during the annual registration period from December to January.

Please note that this pathway involves a participation fee.

    Connect with young people in other countries and collaborate on global environmental and sustainability challenges.

    Register your school, explore YRE action guides and resources, investigate local restoration initiatives, take action and showcase your projects as part of the global #GenerationRestoration movement.

  • Take part in Global Action Days
    Join FEE's annual global campaign for environmental action. Access free activities, investigate local sustainability challenges, take action in your community and connect with young people around the world.

  • Every article, photograph, podcast or video can help bring attention to an environmental issue or solution. Explore your community, ask questions, investigate solutions and share the stories that need to be heard.

What is FEE?

Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) is one out of five programmes run by Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The programme aims to empower young people to take an educated stand on environmental issues they feel strongly about and to give them a platform to articulate these issues through the media of writing, photography or video. The programme offers young generations a chance to make their voices heard while improving their writing and presentation skills.

The advantages of the Young Reporters for the Environment programme are many and varied: from the primary objectives of environmental protection and education for sustainable development, to the rewards such accreditation brings in the form of more awareness and a higher level of environmental responsibility among the participants and those they influence in their community.
